Today, I rushed out the front door due to the fact that I woke late and was wondering if the garbage collection people had already finished collection on my street.
As I entered the driveway in my slippers (Microfoam makes all the difference) I noticed my neighbor, who lives across the street (let's call her Nat for the sake of this post), rolling a full can of garbage down the road. I also noticed that I had missed the collection people, but the garbage across the street was not yet collected.
Why was my neighbor rolling a full can down the road? This seemed odd as the garbage was not collected on her side of the road and the fact that she had no garbage can in front of her home!
We quickly rolled our 2 garbage cans across the street to a vacant house located next to that particular neighbor across the street. I had the blinds down but open to see when the garbage people would collect, so we could retrieve the cans.
As the garbage truck approached, I informed Cordell that the garbage people were here and for Cordell to get his shoes on so that he could retrieve the cans. By the time he had gotten outside, Nat had already rolled the cans across the street. The garbage truck was still on our street, only a few homes down. Incidentally, Nat did not leave the cans in front of our home but in front of the home of our next door neighbor.
I went outside and saw Nat. I said, "What do you think you are doing?
She said, "I moved the cans across the street?"
I said, "Why were you rolling a can down the road?"
She said, "Are you watching me through your window!"
Well, as a communications professor and student of life, I do so like to play with people and I responded, "Why yes, as a matter of fact, I am." I found this amusing. What type of response is that question? I believe a response from a paranoid person possibly. Should I be toying with a paranoid? Perhaps not the best idea. However, when I first moved in, she informed me she was the eyes and ears of the neighborhood. I have caught her trespassing on other people's property to pull weeds, I have listened to her threaten neighbors and she called the cops on one neighbor. My landlord told me that she has called him on a few occassions regarding foolish matters.
I am sure he will get a call from her this week!
I told her I was joking but at that point, it was clear she did not believe me. She even said to her husband, "She's been watching me". I wonder what was in that can. Was it even her can? Why drag your can down the road. That just does not make sense at all. Her later explanation that she had done yardwork did not seem to make sense.
Here's what I think. I think that when she did her yard work that she did not use 33 gallon bags and that her weeds and debris would fall into the street. She knew this and rolled her can in front of someone else's home.
We were discussing dogs at one point. The husband stated, "I don't need a dog." I said, "I know."
As they walked to their home I added, "You already have one."
